You are up. Maybe a few hundred. Maybe more than you have seen in months.
And somewhere you know: this is the moment to stop. But it feels like the worst moment to stop. It is finally going well.
That feeling is exactly why this is so hard. And why you are reading this.
Why stopping when you are winning is so hard
When you lose, you know something is wrong. You feel it in your stomach. When you win, it feels right. As if you are finally showing that you understand it.
A few things happen at the same time.
A win feels like proof. "See, I can do this." Every win seems to confirm that your system works, that you know the teams, that you know when to bet.
A win feels like free money. It is "not really your money", so putting it back in feels less bad. But it is your money. From the moment you win, it belongs to you.
A win raises the bar. After a big win, a small win feels like nothing. You want that feeling back. So the stakes go up.
A win keeps the secret safe. After a win there is no gap in your account for a while. Nobody notices anything. There is no reason to tell anyone.
What I learned
I gambled for more than eight years and ended up over 40,000 in debt. What I came to see: if I had won it back, I would have gambled it again. A win was not a way out. It would only have been the stake for the next bet.
That realisation mattered more to me than any promise I made to myself. As long as you think the next win will save you, you keep playing. Once you see that winning only keeps you playing longer, something changes.
The sum that always comes out the same
Casino games are built so that the casino wins over time. With sports betting, the bookmaker's margin is built into the odds. That is their business.
You can win for an evening. A week. Sometimes longer. But if you keep playing, you are playing against that margin. The longer you go on, the more likely it is that your winnings go back where they came from.
So stopping when you are up is not "stopping too early". It is the only way to actually keep a win.
What to do now, while you are winning
1. Stop today, not after the next win
There is no better moment coming. "One more and then I stop" is a sentence you have said before. You know how it ends.
Stop now, while you are up. It will feel wrong. That is normal.
2. Withdraw it. All of it.
Request a full withdrawal to your bank account. Not part of it. All of it.
Do not leave a balance "for later". A balance on a gambling account is an invitation. And do not cancel a withdrawal because it is taking a while. That is exactly when a lot of winnings disappear again.
3. Close the door behind you
Once the money is off the account:
- Sign up to GamStop. It excludes you from gambling companies licensed in Great Britain. More in Can you cancel GamStop early?
- Install a blocker on your phone and laptop, and turn on your bank's gambling block. See How to block gambling sites, apps and bank payments.
- Delete the apps. Including the sports apps with odds in them.
4. Give the money a job within a day
Winnings that sit in your account without a purpose tend to become stakes again. Give them a fixed place within 24 hours.
- In debt? Pay one off. A whole one, if you can. A debt you have paid off cannot be bet again. How to choose the order is in How to pay off gambling debt and rebuild your finances.
- Behind on bills? Rent, council tax and energy come first.
- No debt? Put it in a savings account you cannot reach instantly, or ask someone you trust to keep an eye on it.
5. Tell someone
A win is as much a secret as a loss. Tell someone that you won, that you want to stop and what you are doing with the money. Then it is no longer only your own promise.
Not sure how to start that conversation? Read How to tell someone you have a gambling problem.
The urge after a win
Expect the urge to come back. Often right after a win, with thoughts like:
- "I have figured it out now."
- "With this much, I can safely bet a bit higher."
- "One more and I will have enough to clear that debt."
Recognise them for what they are: the voice that wants to keep you playing. You do not have to argue with it. Delay it. Set a timer for 15 minutes and do something else. Go outside, call someone, write down what you feel. The urge usually fades when you do not follow it.
The free recovery kit in the app has exercises for exactly this moment, with a timer and the helpline one tap away.
If you have been up before
Maybe this sounds familiar: you have been up before, and every time it went back. That says nothing about your character. It says something about how gambling works.
That is exactly when it helps not to rely on willpower alone. Locks on your phone and your bank, someone who keeps an eye on things, and evenings that are filled before they start. What to do instead of gambling helps with those hours.
If you cannot stop, even now that you are winning, call the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133. It is free and open 24/7. Or talk to your GP.
Today
You are up. That is rare. Use it.
Withdraw it. Close the door. Give it a job. Tell someone.
Then this is the first win you actually keep.
Frequently asked questions
How do you stop gambling when you are winning?
Stop today, not after the next win. Withdraw all of it to your bank account, sign up to GamStop and install a blocker. Give the money a job within a day, such as paying off a debt, and tell someone what you are doing.
Why is it so hard to stop gambling when winning?
A win feels like proof that you understand it, it feels like free money, it raises the bar and it keeps the secret safe. That makes carrying on feel logical, while anyone who keeps playing is playing against the operator's margin.
What should I do with my gambling winnings?
Give them a fixed place within 24 hours. If you are in debt, pay one off. If you are behind on bills, pay rent, council tax and energy first. Without debt, put it in a savings account you cannot reach instantly.
